Ceramic Vase or Planter or What? Empty Ceramic Vase or Planter or What?

Hi- I think this is American pottery but cannot find it in any of my books or online. I am not even sure what it is, exactly, a vase, a jardiniere, a planter, a ??
Can anyone help me id this?

It could well have been imported from the UK (or Europe) at the time or later, as it looks early 20th century moulded ware. It is the type of thing that was sold as part of a set and the size would probably determine what it was meant to be used for.
