Re: Large lidded pot
The person it belongs to thinks it is R Mc, but not having the pot in my hands makes it harder, plus my eyes aren't great at the best of times.
I'm thinking it's Continental.

Re: Large lidded pot
Thanks for the feedback folks.
I've advised the owner that it may be Continental, or by one of the thousands (past / present) in the UK.
They wanted a name and a valuation, but I've told them it's likely nothing special (nice pot that it is), as if unrecognised on here then it's likely nothing exciting.

Re: Large lidded pot
I agree dan. I said £30 with a fair wind behind it, depending upon who is at the sale.
Many thanks again

Re: Large lidded pot
Plenty of unsold identified pots by good makers on eBay for £30-40. For an unidentified one you'd be very lucky to get that, imo, unless someone knows what it is and thinks they're getting a bargain.

Re: Large lidded pot
I agree Naomi. It's actually in a future sale at auction (once they finish the catalogue). I'm surprised it was accepted as (as nice as it is) I didn't think it was worth entry. Had it been mine I would have taken it with a mixed lot and entered it, but the vendor and auction house seem to think it might be something more valuable. I'll be interested to see what it sells for.

Re: Large lidded pot
I saw some similar pieces in Jerez 16 years ago, the subject matter and construction technique is right up my Calle.

Re: Large lidded pot
Don't suppose there is a base pic, can't see the clay
Edit: That is not a signature

Re: Large lidded pot
Funny you should say that Dan, my partner thinks it is Spanish.
No base pic Crawford, just the two photos I've uploaded.
Thanks very much Naomi, that could be really useful.
I'm going to forward everything on on Monday. I'll leave them to dig about and will see what they come up with. At least they've got more to go on than they had before.
I'll be interested to know if it's red earthenware.
I'll update on here as to how they catalogue it and whether it actually sells or not.
Many thanks all for your help, I really appreciate it

Re: Large lidded pot
This website has a page from 2012 on Fortcustard pottery/ Kevin Walker and it tells a very interesting story about a potter who seems to keep /have kept to himself, but whose son wanted to share his work with the forum. The pics on that page cannot be seen - at least by me. Google Images for Fortcustard/Kevin Walker is showing images decorated along similar lines to this pot. Sorry if I am stating the obvious.

Re: Large lidded pot
Might be Italian, Octopus like that in many West coast pieces, but would expect the clay to be pink earthenware
Re: Large lidded pot
All input greatly appreciated Fresco / Crawford. Thank you both very much, I am really grateful.

Re: Large lidded pot
This piece sold at auction for over £105 (including commission). It was listed as unknown with one other studio piece. I was more than a little surprised.

Re: Large lidded pot
it's a good pot, the buyer probably thinks it was a bargain at that price

Re: Large lidded pot
Quite possibly Dan. I viewed it in person, was better in the flesh. I would have bought it myself had it been under £50.
Would liked to have known the maker.

Re: Large lidded pot
No, stoneware, which rules out Kevin Walker, I believe.
