with rising prices and the relative ease in which these things can be copied i think a certain amount of provenance is essential, just because an item looks ok or similar to others it does not mean it's right.

Re: Maltby boat picture: Anybody ever seen a Maltby signature like this?
ok thanks , like you i have seen a number of fakes in the past from 18th century pottery through to troika and whitefriars glass ,these fakes or reproductions only undermine the confidence of potential new buyers and the point i was trying to make was that items like maltbys constructions are fairly easy to fake and should be approached carefully .

sold for £555. An experienced collector on FB bought it and it had 25 bids so I think it's legit.

The gentleman in question must have a house like the Tardis, given how big his collection must be!

There is one collector of Maltbys collages, etc, who has them displayed floor to ceiling

Re: Maltby boat picture: Anybody ever seen a Maltby signature like this?
I must admit when I saw the asking price on that Big Maltby I muttered Nahhhhh. More fool me. That must be a near record price for him.
The MALTBY model piece was quite a sizeable sum for what have probably been bought cheaper at an ordinary auction.
A new expensive dawn for the prices of studio pottery? Ii dunno. There is an awful lot of silly, hot money sloshing around the world monetary system now. From the Bonkers rise of cryptocurrencies like Bitcon ( a subject completely unitelligible to me!) to the oversubscribed market launches of tech unicorns whose only claim to fame is that have already lost £billions, to the record breaking prices in the British housing market.
Its all looking for ways to keep value, when in the real world value of money itself is being lessened through inflation being more than in interest rates.
There is a feeling of herd panic in the air, of South Sea Bubbles, of Black Dutch Tulips, of 1920's like stock market crashes.,,,,

Re: Maltby boat picture: Anybody ever seen a Maltby signature like this?
I have noticed over recent months that a number of popular ceramic items have made higher prices on eBay than in other auctions and galleries.

Re: Maltby boat picture: Anybody ever seen a Maltby signature like this?
I’ve seen pieces sold at auction that have turned up on eBay for twice the price. I suspect it’s a couple of dealers doing it. Auction prices are high enough as it is as collectors pile in thinking they’ll get a bargain.

Re: Maltby boat picture: Anybody ever seen a Maltby signature like this?
A dealer bought some Maltby's from me last year at a price that I was happy with and I was congratulated by another dealer in getting the prices that I did.
The person that bought the items from me only sold one piece on eBay, as far as I know, and that went for more than double what he bought it from me for. That was before Maltby died too.
It doesn't bother me personally but I have never understood collectors that won't look or buy unless it's an auction situation. Maybe it's the excitement and a similar buzz to gambling that attracts them. Perhaps that they need to be convinced that it is as good as they believe it is. I don't know.
