House Move - Lots of Pots!
Either moving house or decant house into shed in garden & renovate, undecided, need advice.
Ok I have options - either;
Decant my 'few' boxes into a metal? shed in the garden along with all possessions? 100 - 150 sqft?
Send/take to off site storage - expensive! any advice?
Rent garage (no insurance )
?
Any advice on packing, numbering etc?
Freezing conditions?
Is it insured in the garden?
I have 30 boxes + what is out so x40+ boxes?

Re: House Move - Lots of Pots!
Sheds are okay for pots if you insulate them a bit and keep them dry
Insurance doesn't cover houses for the loss of huge pottery collections so good locks and an angry dog are better.
Take a group photo of all the pots that you intend to go into a packing box and staple one print to the box, another copy should go in your inventory which you may want to colour code or alphabetize.

Re: House Move - Lots of Pots!
Worth checking if anyone local wants to rent out their garage.
But a shed in the garden should be fine.

Yeah, garages ae no real protection, all eggs in one basket. It could be several streets away, can't afford to check it every day, and if someone break in even if they don't take much others might. OK for stuff you are not sentimental about but your precious pots?
On the good side they ae cheap

Our estate had a run of break-ins in the garages but they only opened our garage door halfway and found it stuffed with bubblewrap and boxes - all the crockery was in the back, out of reach. And they were only interested in lawn mowers and tools.

But hat happens if it's left that way for several weeks with kids getting in there?
It's bottom of my list ATM
But storage like big yellow is amazingly expensive!

Re: House Move - Lots of Pots!
Did this two years ago and it took us ages.
Buy those Very Very Big rolls of Bubble wrap from Ebay. lots of selotpape and brown tape. Wrap as though you are sending them by post. Get strong double walled brown cardboard boxes of varying decent sizes, and work out exactly what different sizes will fit in each box. Label each box to your own codes.
Make sure that each box is not too heavy to shift from the floor and put down again. That is where you get the breakages! Leave yourself a very great deal of time to do it. It actually takes ages.
If you are using a lock up garage, try as Naomi says to get the front full of rubbish like packing etc. Put the good stuff at the back.
Depending on what renovations you are doing, everything will take a good deal longer than you thought. We had ours in the garage for six months, and some of it is still there! Cos you might well find that when you refurbish and re-decorate you want to redefine your collection and its display. It mostly ends up with less looking more!

Re: House Move - Lots of Pots!
Put my mums house on the market last year (although she decided not to sell in the end) but it took me 6 months to sort through her double garage and loft which were mostly full of my dad’s books.

Re: House Move - Lots of Pots!
Thanks Phil some good solid advice there. I did buy load of double walled boxes already as they stack so much better being all same size.
