MID 20TH CENTURY STUDIO POTTERY COFFEE CUPS AND SAUCERS
I have a set of three black metallic glazed coffee cups and saucers. The cups have a contrasting celadon glazed interior and distinctive straight handles. Anyone seen the like before and possible origin? There is a 'ghost' of a mark on the base of 2 of the cups... Looks like a 5 letter word, possibly beginning with 'A'. Thanks

Good call, but had a look and can't find anything with this handle. Also, mine seem a little 'rougher', a more hand made feel than Arabia, which have really nice glazes but more regular in manufacture (possibly?) Thanks DD.

The glaze reminds me of Prinknash Abbey pottery, but they don't use celadon, I don't believe

That is a very odd shaped handle for a British mid-century coffee cup. It speaks of a sophistication you would not expect in 50's Britain, when they mostly drank Nescafe from coffee pots.
Italian? French?

Eric Leaper used that glaze and white clay but don't remember that handle

Could be Vallauris?? Charles Voltz made some with a similar handle shape, but conical and hollow. Don't think it's one of his.

I agree it could be Vallauris but then I allways say that

It looks as though there was only enough space for the "ALLAUR" of "VALLAURIS".

Found this guy André Baud, who worked around Vallauris in the 1950's who used this black glaze quite a lot. He mainly designed arty bowls and vases with dribbled glaze decoration, but some where just black. Not sure he ventured into coffee cups though??
