Studio teapot , Clive Bowen, verified
Studio teapot, Slipware, chocolate brown glaze with dark brown and yellow painting.
Typical Clive Bowen style. Pretty large. I know he does this shape and shape lid too, or at least used to.
I’m just checking that it really is his as I did make a mistake once with a Clive Bowen bowl on eBay which wasn’t his!
It’s not signed but it looks like it’s got his name on it.

The base is a bit messy for a potter of Clive Bowen's standing. Equally the clay does not look right. It looks too light in colour. Clive Bowen uses a Devon Iron Rich clay which is a good deal more reddish.
I think you would have difficulty selling it is a Clive Bowen. His collectors are very selective.

Thank you Phil. You’re probably right. I’ve got one bowl of his at home at hand which is definitely much redder with little gritty bits in. But I sold an early marked tankard recently with a much greyer body and a messier base too. see photos. And there’s a marked teapot on eBay of similar shape with the same grey body. So he obviously used different clays much earlier on. I will try and contact him and see what he says. And if it it someone else then it’s a tribute to him to have people following his style. ( hopefully)

Or maybe you know some other potters it could be?

I had a message from Clive saying it was his work so I’m really pleased it got a positive ID.
“It is indeed one of mine - although a very unusual decoration for me
Best wishes
Clive”

I am surprised that it is his because of what he says about the decoration. It does really illustrate that without him verifying it and no other provenance that it would never have been possible to be 100% positive about the teapot.

Reminds me that there’s an unmarked vase by Geoffrey Whiting on eBay at the moment. I asked the seller where the attribution came from - Whiting’s son
