Lotus Pottery (Devon) Michael & Elizabeth Skipwith
Lotus Pottery was founded in 1957 by Michael and Elizabeth Skipwith at Stoke Gabriel in Devon. For the first 20 or so years they produced earthenware until Michael built a wood fired kiln and they then started making stoneware and porcelain items.

Not all Lotus is marked, but when it is you normally get either a black ink stamp or an impressed seal mark or both as on this piece.dantheman wrote:did Lotus mark any of their pottery?

I found a very odd piece of Lotus Studio Pottery by Michael Skipwith
Hi
A very unusual example, approx 17 cm high and unlike any Stoke Gabriel Lotus pottery I have seen to date, any thoughts?

Re: Lotus Pottery (Devon) Michael & Elizabeth Skipwith
The mark seems right. Maybe it was by one of the visiting potters, eg Paul Bearne

It is very typical of the type of pots Michael was making in the late 1980s.

LP marked Lotus Pottery vase with a distinct Chessell IoW influence
Hi Team
LP with dot marks for Lotus Pottery aka Stoke Gabriel (just up the road from me) but a distinct Chessell Pottery rim finish and type of pottery.
I looked but could not find a relationship between the two potteries or potters.
Any thoughts, could just be an influence of the period in form but to use the same raw material as well seems a stretch.

Thank you very much Davee. I'd previously discounted Lotus because of the style and only being familiar with the printed mark - you've solved a mystery!

Of course - it’s just down the road from me. I just expect to see it on their green wares, not a pot like this. Well done! I need to find the lid now.

8 Stoke Gabriel Lotus Pottery mini Planter Pot Holder what are the numbers?
Hi
A sample of 8 small plant pots I was excited to find today.
Lotus Pottery, Stoke Gabriel local to me.
Some are stamped with the LP mark, some are a little wonky. And not all with drainage holes.
I love them and all are new to me.
Some have painted numbers, some marker pen and some impressed numbers. Would these be test firing batch numbers is my question as they don't seem to exist as majorly produced ranges in related searching. Sure prone to be broken from use but there should be others around.
Thanks

Re: Lotus Pottery (Devon) Michael & Elizabeth Skipwith
Could be lots of things.Often marks on studio pottery are glaze codes. Probably not in this case tho. Probably entirely arbitrary personal or technical reasons that were entirely to help the potter. That is it with studio pottery of course, it is entirely pwrsonal. That being a lot of its charm.

Re: Lotus Pottery (Devon) Michael & Elizabeth Skipwith
Thanks Phil. It was my leaning that they were to help the potter/s myself.
I have to admit I think I will keep some and especially the wonky ones, it's so personal of the process of a pottery.

Re: Lotus Pottery (Devon) Michael & Elizabeth Skipwith
I think glaze or batch test is most likely
