Unmarked jardiniere and pedestal
Hi! My first post so bear with me! . Couple things puzzle me. First off the jardiniere is not as heavy as I would expect. And then there is the bottom of the pot. Is that saw marks like in Camark? I read an article that said Japanese imports are lighter than American so I’m suspicious that may not be American? Any help appreciated. I have Google lens’d it and looked thru my pile of books.

The base does suggest it is a recent imported piece from Asia.

Thanks for your response. What about the base signals import to you?

The wash covering. If it was period the glaze would be as on the rest of the body. From ones that I have seen that are imported into the UK now that base covering often means that the material it is made of isn't actually pottery but without seeing it and feeling it no one could be certain.
However, your initial reaction that it is not heavy as expected is really the thing that should alert you.
It should tell you that this is not an original period piece but a later copy and might even have been made yesterday, as we say here. If you are looking for an original piece you should pass it by. If you are looking for something decorative then you shouldn't pay much for it.

Ok thanks for explaining. There is so much to know about pottery and I’m learning a little bit at a time. At least I know my instinct was right when I picked it up and felt surprised. Thanks again for taking the time.

We all really learn the same way and so you just need to keep getting out there. We have all got things wrong but I have tried to always think that, if in doubt, pass it by. Sometimes that decision is incorrect but my view is that it's far better to be safe than sorry.
