Moth and RJ mark - Robert Leslie Johnson, Berwickshire
Potter from the Scottish Borders, works mainly in salt glazed stoneware and produces functional and more individual pieces. Though his later work may have changed from this.
Here are a couple of his pieces from my collection:
Here is his mark:

That's because he sold his soul to the Devil............. down at the Crossroads.
P.S. I know that no-one else will understand that but I just had to write it.

I think your right, but I do that fairly often myself... if that helps.

I got it - and I'm much too young. Did you see that photo they found of him? Incredibly long fingers
Re: Moth and RJ mark - Robert Leslie Johnson, Berwickshire
I was thinking it was something music related, my guess was "The Devil Went Down to Georgia"

People who saw the blues musician, rather than the potter of the same name, when he was alive (he died in 1938) commented on his long fingers. However, the photograph that you refer to that is supposed to be of him and fellow musician, Johnny Shines, is thought by almost every reliable source to not be of the two musicians. About the only people who do believe it to be of Johnson is the guy who bought it off a well known internet auction site and the two other parties who get royalities when it is used.
Do we know if Robert Johnson, the potter, is black and likes to dress up in fashion that was popular in the 1940s, several years after the blues musician of the same name died? If so, then the picture might be of him, as long fingers probably help with potting as well.

The books I buy are hopeless, they don't tell you any of these key details!

Actually IMO Johnny's Fiddle playing was good but made to sound mediocre by the devil , the devil showed a lot more maturity in his style and an advanced technique that Johnny struggled to match ...therefore I judge that the Devil gets to keep Johnny's Soul , Them's the breaks folks

The devil did have the help of a band of demons so Johnny got to keep his soul on a technicality

Ok , good point , I overlooked that , but Johnny should be more careful in future , making bets with the Devil ( or William Hill) can be very costly.

ID Help Request Small Stoneware Flagon - Robert Johnson.
Picked up this little flagon yesterday, nicely made but to be completely honest the reason I bought it is because it is marked with my initials RJ. As can be seen in the photos it has 2 impressed marks on the base, one as previously mentioned RJ and not entirely sure what the other is supposed to be. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm drawing a blank so far.

Thank you Potty, just googled his name and spot on, mark is on one of Naomi's pinterest boards.
Of course if you google studio pottery mark RJ you get all sorts of crazy results but not that one.
