small square vase with Picasso signature
curious what the experts here think of this piece?
I bought it for a small sum of money because I liked the design
the different designs on each side would be considered sgrafito in Italian but my understanding is that French artists made these pieces for Picasso in or near Vallauris
any comments are welcome
sure there are zillions Picasso fakes out in the world ;-)

Re: small square vase with Picasso signature
Not for me.
Interesting podcast about a possible Picasso if you like a good tale

Re: small square vase with Picasso signature
The base looks somewhat unprofessional. The sgrafitto looks as though it could be thinner and sharper in places. The slipware on decoration the top looks too thin. Sorry not for me either.

Re: small square vase with Picasso signature
It’s either Picasso’s signature or someone has deliberately copied Picasso’s signature. You’d need to research his ceramics to find out which it is. Not something we can help you with on this forum tbh. Best to take it to an auction house

Re: small square vase with Picasso signature
The person that made it made a better job of copying the signature than copying any pot that Picasso made or had made for him.
I remember years ago looking on eBay and seeing many paintings. prints and a few pieces of pottery that were listed as "signed Picasso". Basically, there is nothing wrong with that description, as it didn't say that they were signed by Pablo Picasso.
So you have got what you think you had bought - a slab built pot signed Picasso but not made by Pablo Picasso or made for him to his design.

Re: small square vase with Picasso signature
The podcast is an interesting tale. I think the expert in the end of that one say take off the signature and re-appraise the piece. Does it have the qualities you would look for in a Picasso object? There is this famous video where they got him to paint on a screen and filmed from behind - his brustrokes are exact and very fluid, no scratching and hesitance from Picasso
