Looks like they are by different potters so I’ll split the thread. If either are IDed then we move their thread to the relevant section.

The Japanese type mark looks somewhat like that of Shigeyoshi Ichino, who was at St Ives Pottery in 1969/70. He became great friends with John Bedding, and John Bedding went back to Japan with him for a couple of years.

I’ve split the thread so best to add your comment on the other one and then I can edit this thread

Hi Philpot,
I have a piece by Shigeyoshi Ichino which I bought through St Ives Ceramics ostensibly from John Bedding.
I have looked at the two marks and I can see your point but I don't think they are the same.
The problem with the one I have of his is that the base is a little more grainy than the other. You will know the difference probably one is stoneware so it is clearer and I accept that marks change but the one I posted is both clearer, larger and of a different shape (outside) than the characters inside the vase. I can see what you are saying though and appreciate your help.

Looks like a heart shaped mark with an ER inside

To me, it looks more like a heart with three kanji symbols inside.

Thanks to both of you Janetpjohn and NaomiM.
I will have a go tomorrow and see if I can get a clearer image. I even tried to draw it but I got no further forward. It was a little dirty when I bought it and I first thought it was a butterfly but it it isn’t symmetrical - the right hand side is not the same as the left and the contents of the shape appears ‘to my uneducated eye’ to be Cyrillic or Kanji. I have no idea how to interpret it but it’s a challenge.

It looks like a moth

I can't recall seeing a British or Japanese pot with a mark like that. The mark does look more Japanese than British but the stoneware body and the foot don't look Japanese.................... so " a moth" is the best guess.

Thanks Studio-pots
I didn’t hold out much hope - it’s bad enough dealing with British and the foibles around those without then trying to fathom something from a country like Japan. I saw a pot for sale which I was interested in. I searched him on the internet - no joy so thanks for trying appreciate your help!

I have been dealing in Japanese ceramics for the best part of 20 years and I agree.
