Do you actually know how many pots you have got?
I was looking through the Pots we had in the Garage. Then looking through what we had in the bungalow. Just under 600 or so. Mind you that is nearly 30 years collecting. Still, we have stopped buying now.

I find this amount of pots staggering and would be curious to know why each of you have so many. Do you class this amount as a collection?, if so, what themes do you try to illustrate with so many pots.

It just collects. Often at auction the gems have been in multi Lots where you have had to buy a whole Lot. Then one holds on to the unmarketable stuff does one can't bear to throw it away. We also have wide tastes. Leach style Bill Marshall, Mike Dodd, Richard Batterham. Lustre., Modernist, Slip work, Colourful. We have a broad collection.

I collect a few different potters, a few potteries, different glazes, forms, potting methods, sculpture, slab building, wall-mounted stuff, useful stuff. garden pots and investment pieces

I collect what I like. I try to stick to tea-bowls when it comes to studio pottery, but some potters I will buy every year. Just done a rough count of my Geoffrey Swindell collection and it's almost 60 pieces. Over 60 by Dylan Bowen. Almost 40 pieces by Yuta Segawa. Almost 50 by Mark Smalley. Over 20 by Steve Booton.
It doesn't have to be on display although maybe a quarter of it is on the shelves. I'm reminded of traditional Japanese collectors who keep everything in storage in their individual wooden boxes and just have a handful of items out on display, or sometimes just one item. Anyway, everything out on the shelves has to be packed up by Christmas when the family come down because they're bringing their cat.

I would "class" it as a recognised mental health condition
That said, I am as cuckoo as the rest of them

Re: Do you actually know how many pots you have got?
I've always found it really strange that people only collect one thing hen it comes to ceramics, Poole for example. Nothing wrong with Poole, but it you only collect it, it means that you go to fairs and don't even consider 95% of what's there, go to auctions go on the internet and all you are interested in is say Tony Morris. There is so much to learn, to understand. Ceramics are fantastic, all of it!
Nope, I'm only collect Poole. Tony Morris between June 1987 and September 2001 - That was his best Period. So at Fairs you might be standing next to the bargain of the century but refuse to even look at it.
So overall I'm not shocked that people have large collections, I'm shocked at the people who don't have large collections.
I have some nice things, much I have not put on here, I've had some medical issues which has delayed my website just when I was getting going. 500+ for me.

I'll buy a bargain to sell on, but many collectors don't resell, and if they specialise in one area then they're not going to recognise a bargain - which is great for those of us who do resell to fund our collecting
