Modernist High Footed Bowl with Heiroglyphic/ Symbolic Decoration to ID
Dear all
A High footed bowl, popped and pitted khaki glaze (salt?), "handmade" feel to form...
Incised primitive style rust coloured decoration in bowl with black glaze accents.
Heiroglyphic /symbolic characters around the foot in grey.
Markers mark on the bottom of the foot. Cannot ID myself but mark is impressed and seems to include a crescent and a dot sitting within a square with curved corners?
Height - 17cm
Diameter of bowl - 19cm
Diameter of foot at base - 9cm
Heavy in weight
Any info greatly received as always!

Possibly another disciple of Alan Wallwork?

Nothing to with Alan Wallwork and others like him. They just did not use glaze techniques like that. Is that mark a spiral?

Hi philpot,
Thanks for your note which I concur with wholeheartedly. Assume you are talking about the spiral in relation to the makers mark rather than the glazing to the inside of the bowl. Will look further in the light tomorrow and post findings. I do remember feeling that I'd seen the mark somewhere before but as to where!!....
Curious about this one insomuch as it's got a presence and charm about it...I guessing it is circa 1960s-1970s...
Thanks again for your help here!

Hi Philpot
Attached please find a photo of the mark which may be marginally better than my previous efforts, although the light this morning isn't great!
The impressed mark is positioned on the foot of the piece about 1cm from the base and is just under 1cm square. It consists of a impressed square border with rounded corners. Within this square sits two impressions. Firstly a shape a bit like the french circumflex accent "^" which sits within the top portion of the square. Secondly, below this "^" shape sits a further small vertical impression which possibly resembles the number "7" or even a question mark "?"
This is the best I have at present, hope it may be of some use. As mentioned I'm fond of this piece and would relish knowing more about it if it were possible...
Thanks in advance as always for all your help...

Those indentation marks in the centre of the bowl rather devalue it as a piece of professional pottery. While the outside glaze and marking is interesting that inside is disappointing. It might well be a second.

Hi Philpot
Yes, see where you're coming from regarding it possibly being a second. That aside, I hope that someone either owns a piece or possibly recalls the mark which, as you say, is definitely of interest...The search continues!...
Thanks again
