Re: Leach Pottery St Ives - possibly Harry Davis, 1930s
You are absolutely correct in yoir information. A very interesting piece. But because it has not got a personal mark it is very difficult to tell th e maker by style alone.Could you give dimensions? The decoration is very unusual indeed, and the fluidity of the slip work is Very exceptional, as is the beautiful quality of the throwing. The whole piece looks extremely well made.
It is the sheer fluidity and the exceptional quality of the throwing that makes me wonder if it was not made By Harry Davis in the mid 1930's or by David Leach in the 1930's. Harry Davis in particular was an exceptional thrower and went on to found Crowan pottery post-war. Crowan pottery is renowned for the quality of its making.
The two big names you would be looking for would be Bernard Leach and Michael Cardew. Bernard Leach himself was not a brilliant thrower and this one looks just so well and crisply made. Michael Cardew was brilliant at Slip work, but in his years at St Ives he was a pupil learning to make pottery. Similarly this one looks just too well made! All that said,
It might well be a Bernard Leach piece of course. But he nearly almost always used his personal mark. It added resale value!
Without a personal mark it is all total guess work of course. But you do have a lovely piece!

Thank you for your comments and information - I did send a couple more pictures and the dimensions through 22cms tall and 15 diameter but it doesn’t seem to have added on the stream
