Looks like Japanese shino ware. The Gotheborg website isn't very good for these undecorated wares, like shino, bizen, shigeraki, hagi etc. Possibly a kiln mark
This website has a limited number of kiln marks, but unfortunately not for shino ware

Thanks Naomi for all the info. Am I right to say it’s hard to date unless I can identify the kiln name?

I agree with everything that Naomi has written but to answer another of your questions, knowing the kiln mark would be very unlikely to help you date this type of Japanese pottery or any other type. Many kilns (in effect potteries) have been in operation for many decades.
Also shino glazes originates from the Mino and Seto pottery areas of Japan where they are still used extensively today. However, over the years their use has spread throughout Japan and to many parts of the world including the UK.
