19thC Italian Portrait Watercolour Signed G FONTANA ITILAZZO 1878
Hi - I have this well executed watercolour which is dated 1878 and signed I think G Fontana and what looks like Itilazzo - I can find details of a Giovanni Fontana around this period but this is for a sculpture and not a painting. I am also not sure of the worked Itilazzo means - can anyone help please?

there was a Giuseppe Fontana painter who also have paintings in the same style and subject. https://www.mutualart.com/Artist/Giuseppe-Fontana/8C127AB17ECA66B1
In your painting, it is shown a woman from the south of Italy, judging by the dress. So, the unknown word may be Milazzo - a town from Sicily .
all these are not my thoughts :) . I asked a friend who is specialised in Italian linguistic, i suppose she knows better than i do :)

Is it possible it’s a print of a oil painting?

i think either it is an old print because it is shiny in the light and has a rather smooth texture, as i can see

i think i found the painter . it is about Ernesto Fontana, italian painter, the same faces, same women , same themes. and, i can see, the signature is almost identic.

exemple " Portrait of a nobleman, bust-length, in a white shirt and a black coatsigned, inscribed and dated 'E.Fontana Milano 1895' (centre left)"
so, the unknown word isn't Milazzo, it is Milano.

The blue colour is typical of faded prints, and most of his work was in oils

Hi - Thank you for all of your information - I can confirm it is definitely an original artwork and is a watercolour rather than a print. The first initial is definitely a G rather than an E and although it is similar subject matter I think we can rule Ernesto out and as well as you said the other work is oils rather than watercolour. Also the G and F are not the same as shown in the paintings by Giuseppe Fontana so I think this can be ruled out as well sorry!

I think I will remove it from the frame so see if I can see the signature more clearly or see if there is any information on the back so will let you know!
