Nottingham Auction bowl with J mark
I was interested in a bowl at auction recently but kept my hands in my pocket and didn’t bid.
I couldn’t identify the mark and wondered if anyone had any ideas.
The mark was on a bowl which was plain with two blue ladle pour lines on it at right angles to one another (I think that’s what they were).
It didn’t sell so I haven’t got a photograph of the front of the bowl but the mark is clear.
It’s only out of curiosity.

Re: Nottingham Auction bowl with J mark
Lost me Philpot - I buy from auctions every week or most weeks at least, I thought I had made that obvious…….given that I said it was at an auction and I didn’t buy it. I usually only buy what I know - This one I didn’t buy and didn’t know who it was by so thought I would ask.

Re: Nottingham Auction bowl with J mark
Don’t worry, auction items are ok to post here. I know some ID groups that don’t allow photos from shops and auction rooms unless you’ve bought the item but so long as they’re one’s own photos we don’t have that rule. Of course, it makes it easier to ID if we have a full set of photos. I cropped the photo of the mark -

Hi Naomi,
I thought I had done something I shouldn’t have!
Anyway thanks for clearing that - I suppose if you don’t know who it’s by there probably won’t be any response.
I did try looking for ‘dot’ on the BISPM app but failed and I couldn’t think of what else the mark depicted though if it is identified no doubt the mists will clear and it will be obvious!!
Thanks again
Neil

I didn’t like admitting I’d done some of those letters in case you found it!!!
Experience has taught me that you look at marks and see them in a slightly different way - your experience I suppose.
Thank you for your time NaomiM I wish I could repay the favour!

Re: Nottingham Auction bowl with J mark
Was the auction also conveyed online? Maybe there’s a catalogue webpage with photos of it

Re: Nottingham Auction bowl with J mark
It was Naomi but it wasn’t bought so I can’t research it retrospectively.
The auction was in Nottingham but I can’t remember the name of. It.
Honestly it doesn’t matter I was just curious and wondered whether I’d missed something.
Is it unusual to see the mark on a raised piece of different coloured clay like that?
