You’re right. Most Excellent  I’ve come across this mark before but not IDed it. (Not the same as the NC used by Newcomb College)

If the letter in the centre is a badly impressed M then this looks like Michael Cardew's mark. He was not known for wax resist brushwork, but it could be a pot he made in Africa where he was more experimental.. In any case it would be a later piece. The shape and glaze are certainly Cardew like, and the type of lid (inset) and shape of the knob are also similar to other pots of his. It's a lovely pot!
