OK it's an enigma! The french pottery forum reckons it is a spittoon (crachoir). They have shown another example that also has no container underneath.
But I do not understand. Is this a public one? Could it be a dentists spittoon? Why is the handle where it is - would it not get covered?! Why such a decorative item that might be the lid for a large bowl or even a bucket?
Whilst I would love to hear any thoughts I am not really expecting any ... just one life's mysteries I guess.
