Japanese stoneware(?) dish with cranes Empty Japanese stoneware(?) dish with cranes

I think this is studio art pottery. It measures 290mm across the diagonal and weighs a fairly hefty (for its size) 736g.  It was gifted to me by a Japanese colleague who was about to return home. We have long since lost contact, so I can't ask him about it! Any help as to what, who, when will be welcome.
