Sgraffito mottoware slipware Rural Lidded Jar 1882
Dear all,
Not strictly a query regarding a 20th century piece but was hoping to get some pointers regarding an earthenware lidded pot as pictured.
Quite a rustic feel to construction. With incised scrolling decoration along with the text.
Rees Jones
Cleaton Moor
Cumberland
1882
I am researching the location etc but wondered if the form and nature of the piece was something that had been seen by a member.
Any tips on other forums suited to my enquiry would be greatly appreciated.
Ps I also wondered whether the jar might have been for tobacco?!?
Thanks in advance for your help

My first-and second!- thought on seeing this was Wetheriggs pottery in Penrith, Given the location and slipware. Founded in 1855 they did a lot of slipware in Victorian times, including commemorative ware. Google the images!
