HANS COPER ANYONE ? MMMMMM,,,,!
Coming up in an auction at Capes Dunn Southport in a few days time. Given who it is ascribed to it should fetch a handsome figure. But is it Hans Coper? Looks a rather odd to me. But who knows?

Re: HANS COPER ANYONE ? MMMMMM,,,,!
I had seen this pot and asked for any provenance and further images, apparently ,well according to the auction house anyway it was found in a house clearance in some other part of the country. Like you i have my suspicions, the pot looks a bit clumsy although the technique is correct with the scoured blistering and the colouring is less contrasty in the further images i have received. If correct it would have originally been sold through a gallery or an auction room and i have searched all my available catalogues etc of which i have many but can find no sign of it being sold. I think on balance it's a bit chancy to buy this on line and it would need to be handled. This auction room are not expert as can be shown by the descriptions of some other items in the sale.Would you chance £20,000 or more with no real provenance?

Myself I would not touch it with a barge pole. As Naomi says, the mark is wrong. Equally the shape looks strange. Nothing like it in the Tony Birks book or elsewhere much. Not even too sure about the glazing.
What you have been told Croker makes it even more unlikely. Why is it in a small provincial auction? Anybody who know their Coper Onions would have placed this in a Big Auction House with lot of publicity. House clearance sale??????? That sounds even more strange.
Lets be charitable as you have been Croker. Something definitely not worth risking one's money on in an Internet sale. Closer individual inspection might give a Buyer more confidence, and make them think of making a serious bid.
It will be very interesting to see what it sells for.

It is actually still being shown in the catalogue on their website as For Sale.

Have not seen such a major cock like that up in an reputable auction house in a long time. The very first thing you investigate is the signature or mark!

Someone bought it after the sale. Presumably they did not have any doubts about it. Who knows? They saw it, and inspected it closely if they were at the sale. Unlike, us just from a photo. They have got a good bargain. Or an expensive pig in a poke.

Re: HANS COPER ANYONE ? MMMMMM,,,,!
I had a word with an auctioneer friend who said it was most likely a pre sale transaction and that is why they had to show the lot as sold on the saleroom to stop any bids coming in they had no control over ,( also i suspect it was sold with a no returns clause )
