Re: Slipware jug - trailed decoration
It does not look as though it was made by a studio potter. The number looking to be stamped on. But the slip decoration is very good. It would have taken some time to do. So would have sold at a higher price.May well be an Art country pottery. Of which there a number in former times. More an item made to be sold in a shop rather than the utilitarian ware that a lot of Country potteries produced.
A pottery that comes to mind is Wethereriggs pottery near Penrith. A long running country pottery near Penrith which ran well into the latter half of the 20th century, They certainly did a lot of slipware.
As a matter of interest, how much liquid does it hold?

Thanks for your reply Philpot. I thought that the large number would mean it was not studio pottery, as well.
I just tried and it holds a little over 2 pints.

Re: Slipware jug - trailed decoration
2 pints would probably indicate that it came from a standard form that was made regularly. Then decorated for a specific market. One cannot see from the photos, but has it any crazing in the glaze? That would indicate some age.

No, there is no crazing to the glaze.
It feels like its hand thrown to me as the thickness is uneven and I can feel the finger ridges.

Re: Slipware jug - trailed decoration
Is it bottom heavy? If not it’s probably professionally thrown, but the slip trailing is very amateur so it might be a pot set aside for visitors to the pottery to practice on, and the number on the bottom is a reference so it can be matched to the visitor after firing for them to collect at a later date

Interesting point, Naomi. It does not seem bottom heavy to me.
Looking again more closely, the cream glaze is a little cracked.
