CHORLEYS 200 LOT AUCTION. HENDERSON , BALDWIN, LEACH,WARD ONLINE ONLY

Now here is an interesting beastie. An over 200 lot specialist timed online studio pottery auction. Its got a good selection of Studio pottery right across the board. Lots Baldwin. Henderson, Yasuda, Leach, Malone et al.Perhaps nO Gosh Wow! lots. But a pretty good one.
But there is a catch. Its a two week online bidding auction. Viewing only on Wednesday October 4 for one day. Bidding only through the Saleroom. No Online condition descriptions, reports by request. There is a normal list of professional carriers. Payment by BanK transfer only.
The Long List of Terms and condition when buying!

Is this the way the auction market is going? It does BEG numerous questions. Only through the Saleroom. very little viewing, no automatic descriptions. Chorleys are long standing auctioneers. An interesting saleroom in a deep valley about 10 miles from Cheltenham. But... They are auctioneers. Outside all the normal caveats that apply to other online outlets. Moreover, it is going to be an expensive way of buying.

Some good looking useful things in this sale (in my opinion), but yes, nothing too starry.
I’m going to email Chorley’s and ask if I can view w/b 9th Oct as will be working in the area - I’ll bid on things if I can handle them and you’d be silly to turn away people who will actually buy. Wish me luck.

… glorified eBay isn’t it. Does make me feel like Chorley’s don’t think this genre of work is worthy of a ‘normal’ sale.

Not a good auction this. A very large number of unsolds and low bidS. Very poor advert for On line auctions!"

Not sure they will repeat it - I bought a few lots from it and I’m happy with what I bought.
When I rang to pay this morning they couldn’t work out who won the lots.
After a while they rang me back and confirmed the lots I won.
Speaking to staff down there who were very helpful they explained that The Saleroom apparently encourage auctions to use this format but they hadn’t explained how it worked exactly and the auction details didn’t match with the buyers.
All got sorted eventually and they were good down there but I got the definite inkling that it probably wouldn’t be repeated again quickly!

What did you buy? I was tempted but decided in the end not to bid on the few things that took my eye - Jelfs, Malone, Dodd, etc.

Didn’t buy the Jelfs but yes Malone, Dodd, David Leach - all in good condition but I understand what others are saying.
I was trying to work out WHY and the only thing I can come up with is to save money on staff.
Just like they are doing in so many industries.
Sad

Sounds like a good haul, bravo. Yes, can only agree with you. I'd rather they did a timed online sale through their own platform if they really had too.
