Does this seem right, rather than British ?

Yes, Japanese Mashiko ware. Loads were made with this decoration; I think it was for a restaurant chain

As Naomi says they were imported for a Japanese restaurant business that I was told never opened here in the UK. We must be talking late 1980s or early 1990s and so "ahead of its time". I have in the past seen square bottles too with the same design and I imagine they were from the same order.

There were far fewer, as you would expect, and I haven't seen one for the best part of 20 years.
