Re: Riihimaen Lasi OY. by Helena Tynell/Theodor Kappi.
This would appear to be a pre-war design from the 1930s when they did Classical and
Art deco designs, by several designers, using engraving and sand blasting.
There seems to be a date 53, so maybe they carried on making them post-war.
Scandi engraved script is hard enough without the scratches on the base!
But part of it maybe the "name" of the design, as well as the designer.
Is there a little more script on the left of the third image, or is that just scratches?
BTW your pix are not displaying properly as they are too large (1024).
We recommend using 640pix width for proper display.

I have now come across a very similar design of vase in another book, with almost identical flying birds, from 1951/52, that was by Helena Tynell.
Can we imagine seeing that name, or HT, in the script somewhere?

Thank you. I will check piece again as soon as possible. Is it possible for you to send a picture of the Helena Tynell vase from the book you reference. I will check image size also when I look for HT or similar.

I have PM'd you the image.
Most strange, I have so far been unable to find a single image on line
of this style of vase by Riihimaki.

Based on your reference to Helena Tynell, I did a bit of further research (see link below) which indicates that this may be a collaborative piece between Theodor Kappi and Helena Tynell. Apparently they worked together on similar pieces in the early 1950's. I can see the Th Kappi signature more clearly now, as well as the H Tynell - although her name is scratched up quite a bit. BTW, no attachment with the PM.

As you know we don't enter into valuations, but the fact I've been unable to
find anything similar on line, implies it's quite a rare piece. An independent
appraisal might be in order.
I have learned something anyway, as I've had to read up on all this!

Agreed with you on that. I know valuation issues are not covered here; I have reached out to a few appraisers. We'll see what happens and thanks again.
