Nice piece. A Welsh Lion Rampant. How big is it? Charger size would suggest that it was made for some special Welsh occasion.

Hi Philpot, happy new year to you sir.
It's large, I've not measured it, but estimate around 14 inches or thereabouts.
Is it not a Griffin? Happy to be corrected if wrong.
I did find a potter's mark that is very similar, by an Australian gent.
It is a lovely piece, just a pity it's so heavy, quite likely to bring my wall down lol.

Griffin? or Welsh Lion.? I don't know. But as a heraldic device it would make sense. What do you think.

Re: Stoneware charger for ID. JB or BG mark?
Thanks for the link , greatly appreciated.
I'm really not sure, though you may well be on the money.
Were the base colour red I'd be leaning strongly towards the Welsh connection. The blue doesn't come through that well in my photo, but I look at it and think Scotland. I'm probably a million miles away and as clear as the backstamp is, I think it's likely to become one with the many other quality mystery pieces I've got stashed in the attic lol

Problem being it resembles an heraldic device that has been used for centuries over many cultures.
