The catalogue of the latest Adam Partridge sale. Another ginormous one dale, with the normal excellent coverage for the average sale. Fewer Humdinger star lots 5 John Ward, and some nice Ewen Henderson. Some interesting Robin Welch and Ewen Henderson paintings. Another vast overload of 100+ Jim Malone. Its still a great selection for buyers tho!

I think Jim Malone must have a warehouse full of pots to dispose of. He has placed so many on the market in recent years collectors must be overloaded by now. Henderson's watercolour landscape paintings aren't up to much in my opinion i think his later abstracts are much better, a different story with his pots there are some good pieces here . The John Wards are good , one with unusual colour variation. I wonder what Ewen on his mind when he made lot 165.

Adam Partridge auctions have become the star home for collectors of studio pottery.Which is an amazing achievement for a auction site in a small town near Manchester!

Have you ever come across the work of Margery Clinton? A very fine scottish studio potter wo specialised in lustre work.

There is fair selection of her work on Ebay as well.

Yes indeed. My mum had a few of her pots, and I think she influenced my mum to start experimenting with lustre glazes around 1980. After that she used lustre quite extensively. I don't remember ever meeting her though!

The results of the latest July Adam Partridge auction. A rather quiet one this time. Whether it was the time of year, or the massive outages caused by the Microsoft disastrous software patch, one does not know. John Ward was again the top seller, with high prices that one has become used to to. Ewen Henderson was rather patchy with some healthy and some indifferent prices. The market is clearly overloaded with Jim Malone work! Although most of his sold at the bottom of what were low estimates. There was a lot of nice work and paintings from the Robin and Jenny Welch estate which went well.
The market is definitely cooling in some areas tho. Richard Batterham is down to earth! Hardly any of the Clive Bowen sold.

Re: july ADAM PARTRIDGE SALE, 735 LOTs
Morning philpot, I agree a very quiet sale with a number of unsold lots, the John Wards as expected all sold but the two b/w examples fetched much less than similar pieces have made recently, Henderson is going through a bad patch at present with only the very best pieces selling, John Maltby seems to have peaked and maybe dropped back a little for certain pieces. It's a bit hit and miss for the Leach and Cardew schools and definitely cooling.

Re: july ADAM PARTRIDGE SALE, 735 LOTs
One does wonder if Adam Partridge's policy of pile them high and sell everything in the same sale. If you had expensive quality items, would you want them selling at the same time as 700 others? With not much publicity?
When Dreweatt's achieved very high prices for John Ward they gave it vey high publicity. Are the best prices still achieved in London and the South?

Re: july ADAM PARTRIDGE SALE, 735 LOTs
Adam Partridge auctions had a good result with one piece of John Ward in their last sale and i think this may have encouraged this vendor to chance his luck with AP , personally i would choose MAAK if i needed to sell. The sheer size of the Partridge sales and the many makeweight items seem to make the auctioneer impatient when selling and it shows!.

Re: july ADAM PARTRIDGE SALE, 735 LOTs
I have attended a number of Adam Partridge live sales over the years. He is quite a theatrical auctioneer. Perhaps it comes from this TV background. At virtually each piece that does not have a bid immediately. He pauses for effect, and looks around with seemingly real annoyance. It is a technique that actually works very well. He gets bids when you would not expect them.
I think we both agree that his pile it high policy does not encourage higher priced items. A sale price of £2500 is worth 50 of his minimal buy. I can think of no other 'Fine Art' auction house that operates in the same way.
Yet he is extreme successful in what he does.
