Holkham Pottery

Your poodle is certainly unusual and it got me searching for the Holkham Hall newsletter that was posted on the internet and featured an article about the pottery, which had just been closed.

I did find the newsletter and have added a link to the thread above but, although a number of people who worked at the pottery over the years are mentioned, no-one with the initials E L was.

Holkham Hall (where the items were made) is just up the road from me, but I have never seen Holkham hall items marked this way, I have only seen them marked with a printed mark like the one on this page: http://www.studiopottery.com/cgi-bin/pp.cgi?item=6

Forgot, I have also seen the impressed marks, but have seen nothing like the mark you show.

This is a long shot, I know but I have a real interest in the Holkham story.

It all started with a single pot I picked up in my local charity shop. I did some research and it wasn't long before I was captivated by the tale. I am intrigued by the circumstances surrounding the inception of pottery at Holkham and the way that a healing process was enabled through creativity.

It is clear that your Grandfather, the Cokes, Cyril Ruffles and all were at the heart of a fantastic story that grew out of the cataclysmic events of 1939-45. I own several pieces by Cyril. Unfortunately i have not had the pleasure of finding a (very rare, I assume) Keith Corrigan - yet.

I am so keen to know more about the story and the pots that were thrown in the early days before the commemorative stuff started to go into production but it is really hard to get any information at all.

Reading your post I know that you could furnish me with all sorts of knowledge on the subject and I am so eager to find it all out.

It's funny; when people see me going for Holkham pots on Ebay they always say: " is it worth loads?" and they will never understand that it's the story that fascinates not the monetary value.

I have major doubts that you will read this message but I write it anyway in hope.

The thing I like about Holkham is the warmth of the glazes. This tea/coffee pot has an inner light which you find on very few pots

And unusually, a ray of sunshine up north.

I have found this piece which appears to be signed Holkham and initialled JR/JB, all pieces I have seen before have been stamped. This has the Holkham Celtic Band decoration and also I have seen other pieces with the wheat motif. Would anyone have any thoughts on this please John

 

I have always seen this circled before...how old do we think

It isn't the mark used at Holkham during the 1950s and early 1960s so later than that.

Maybe 1970s as the other plate you bought with it.

Any ideas please on a Holkham potter signing his work with incised initials HS (or possibly SH)

 

I think if I remember correctly it is SH, but I cannot remember who SH is and googling did not help me find out either, sorry.

I will try looking again and racking my brain later today.

Sorry, I had no joy in trying to remember the maker or searching for who it is.

Hi, has anyone seen this model lamp base before. I was trying to find out a bit more about it. It's a really interesting design, looks a bit aztec to me!

It definitely feels more 60's - 70's to me too. I have sent an email and some photo's to a lady who works in the archives there. If I find anything out, I'll keep you posted :)

Another Norfolk based item from Holkham pottery. Just for a nano-second I thought it might be a sugar sifter.....

I have various pieces of Holkham  featuring the Celtic Band decoration, I find that I have 3 different monograms and wonder if anyone knows who the potters may be. One is CR which I know is Cyril Ruffles, one is HS/SH and one is R

Found this piece  from Holkham the other day. What period was the stamp on this item used?

This little pot is not looking like the Holkham Pottery I've seen on the web or the forum. Could anyone tell me if it's the Norfolk Holkham Pottery?
I think it's incised JS although it looks as if it's been inscribed again over the same spot.

I've bought a new camera...of course not just for shots of pots...no!......but check these out for lamplight shots.

Never mind the pot, I think your wall needs a lick of paint! That camera is too good.
