hi folks

can anyone help with this unusal pottery figure

inscribed with an opticali llusion type engraving

looks to be marked WK ? on the base

red clay / terracotta base

any help appreciated

Is it heavy? It might be soapstone

hi naomi, yes its very heavy, but solid terracotta underneath

Try a scratch test on the base. If it’s white then it’s soapstone

thanks naomi, the red showing through does indeed scratch white, so i think your right.

makes more sense it being an african shona soapstone piece as well
