Hi all,
Not pottery, but I'd be grateful if can anyone read what this says.

Just bought this print from Bill & Maggi Fisher.
I thought it was going to be one of the greetings cards they did, that someone had framed.
But now I've got it, I think the Fishers must have framed this one themselves. The name/address label on the back is on thick card, rather than just paper as on their greetings cards.

There is also some writing. 18 shillings I can read (about £17.50 today - which after postage is about what I paid for it).
I played around with the image to try and make it as clear as possible, but still can't read what it says.
The image is of a merman, possibly a boy.

The fishers tended to do images of mythical/folk figures from the UK and in particular Cornwall area. So it may be a local name for a merman or a specific character? Or may may say something completely unrelated to the image?

Thanks for having a go Naomi.
Clearly not an easy one to read, as you're the only one who has attempted it so far.
It might be, but I'm not sure.
Sampson maybe? Although I can't find any merman connection to that name.

I wish the Fishers had a clearer handwriting. I've got quite a few images that they've added names to and for most of them, you almost need the image to give a clue to read the writing.

I'm fairly sure it's the Fishers writing. But is it a name for the image, or a name of someone who bought and reserved it, to collect later??

I was originally going to take it out of the frame and make the mount hole a little bigger, to show more of the image. But as I think this is it's original framing, by the Fishers, I'm not going to now.

18 shillings was the equivalent of 90p nowadays! 20 shillings to one Pound.
12 pence to one shilling. 240 pence to the £1. They decimalised to the Pound in 1972, So there is a date for you!
The style of the figure looks like a style of paintings that was very popular back then. Children with Big heads etc.

The style of painting I am thinking of is termed 'Big Eyes' which was copied widely.

Thanks, but it's the writing I'm after.
Date is late 50's or early 60's. When Bill & Maggi were at Mousehole and still using William & Maggi on their labels.
There were 20shillings to the pound. But after 60 years of inflation, the buying power today is the equivalent of around £17.50. The image is a young merman, which is more clear in the full image. I do have another unframed/uncropped version of this image, from a greetings card. It's very typical of what they produced.

Yeh Sampson is the best I can come up with, but I'm not sure about it.

It's not actually a 'painting'. It's block printing of the main image (black parts), with bands of colour applied over the top. As the colours used varied, this gives a different look to each one, even though the image is the same.

If you look carefully in this image, you'll be able to make out the fish tail lower half of the body.
