TENNANT’S YORKSHIRE An interesting collection bought from Peter Dingley

Sale on 5 October Studio pottery scattered amongst the first 100 or so lots. Primarily the collection of David and Brenda Pearson who bought most of it from the famed Peter Dingley gallery in Stratford upon Avon. An interesting look at personal high quality collection. Curiously though, thee are a couple of boxed Shoji Hamada pieces and three Shigeyoshi Ichino pieces. Which sort of raises the question of authenticity that we discussed in the items in the David Lay sale coming on September 6. Curious that these should appear at a sale at the other end of the country...

Re: TENNANT’S YORKSHIRE An interesting collection bought from Peter Dingley
As I have been AWOL, I hadn't seen the David Lay sale until seeing this post today but a quick comment on that would be that buyer's need to be beware and the bottom line would be to inspect the boxes too.
However as far as this sale is concerned all of the Shigeyoshi Ichino's are marked and could well have been bought from Peter Dingley. Ichino was at the Leach Pottery from 1969 to 1973 and produced a considerable number of individual pots there and took part in UK exhibitions.
The 3 Shoji Hamada pieces have no boxes but the provenance is that two were bought by the Pearson's on a trip to Japan in 1972 and the yunomi was given to them during that visit by Shoji's son and grandson. At that time when Shoji Hamada was alive pots bought in that manner wouldn't have had boxes as boxes were only provided when items were bought at exhibitions. Therefore as far as I am concerned the provenance is solid. What happened with a number of items bought from the pottery during Shoji's lifetime after his death was that people contacted the pottery to authenticate the work. Shinsaku provided boxes with script saying the he confirmed that the work was by his father and charged people for this. Going back to the Lay's sale, some of those boxes might have been authenticated by Shinsaku.
