Huge collection. What to do?
Hello, I've joined this forum to ask your advice, please. Sorry if this is in the wrong section. I have access to a huge collection of pottery and I've been asked to make an offer for it. I have no knowledge of this type of thing but it has to go by this Wednesday due to the property it's sitting in will be sold at auction. There are hundreds of pieces. A very large amount of Hillstonia and Vitray Ware, multiples of the same jugs or pots ie: just one box containing 25 of the same Hillstonia jugs. There are also other items I haven't yet looked to see makers marks, multiple pottery hot water bottles, stoneware flagon, stoneware bottles with stoppers. I could try to post some photos of a small selection. The owner who has died lived there for 85 years, his parents started the collection in the house and he continued. I've never seen so much!
So what is the best thing to do with this? I'd hate for it to go to landfill, which it will if I don't have it. I don't think he wants much money either, just to know it won't be thrown. He isn't able to deal with it hence asking me to help. But as I said, I know nothing about any of it or what to do.
Apologies for wordy post, but I hope you can help, it'll go in a skip Wednesday afternoon otherwise.

Re: Huge collection. What to do?
Unfortunately this type of pottery went out of fashion a couple of decades ago. You could try dropping it off at a charity shop, or see if there’s a local auction house that’ll split it up into several Lots and sell it for you - some of the smaller auction houses that do house clearances may take it and sell for a small profit. If there are any early 20thC stoneware bottles and jars names on then they can be collectable but some are very common and not worth much. There are a number of calvados stoneware bottles on one of the shelves which aren’t collectable so a lot of it will probably get thrown out at some point

Thank you, Naomi. It's such a shame to think no one wants much of it anymore. I will try a few local charity shops and see what they say. Appreciate your comments.

Re: Huge collection. What to do?
Some of the stoneware bottles and jars might be good, but ONLY the ones with
lettering, ie. trade names/advertising/ginger beer/brewery/dairy/printing etc.etc.
Plain unlettered ones are pretty worthless, as are unlettered hot water bottles.
Hillstonia is pretty worthless, unless coloured.
I can see quite a few with lettering, which would be worth pulling out.
If you can send me a PM with your location, I know people who would be interested.

I'm not sure how to send a PM, but the location is near Ringwood, New Forest. But they would have to be collected by Wednesday, so not much time. Would I be correct in telling him they're all worthless?

Re: Huge collection. What to do?
Pretty much what Denby and Naomi have said. Most of it is just not collected anymore. So hardly worth anything. Try and see if there any different makers names apart from Hillstonia. There might be couple of studio bits there. Apart from maybe Boot Sales, or at low lot prices at an auctioneer, There is not a lot you can do with most of it.

Re: Huge collection. What to do?
I would save the stoneware bottles and jars with advertisers names on them and try selling at a local auction or giving to the charity shops.
