Yes, probably for the best. Kicking myself now that I didn't buy one of his pieces at a carboot last year.

His pieces have had a strong following for as long as I've been collecting IoW pottery.

A lady came into the shop a couple of years ago and said the Isle of Wight pieces were highly collectable and we were under-valuing them. Since then the manager insists on sticking £5-£10 on every piece that comes in, and they remain unsold, even on the half price shelf.  Shrugs

It'a always amazed me just how much of this stuff there is. The IOW is a popular
holiday destination, and people bought souvenirs, just like the earlier crested china,
which was moulded and transferred, but these pieces are all hand-made, many with
quite intricate, time-consuming. decoration, even on the small items.

Unusual glaze, 6 in high, Mark is blurred, but it does read "JO IOW".

The IOW book is pretty comprehensive on the marks, but this one is not shown, so is a bit of a mystery.
Potty has posted a piece in the Reilly thread, here's one I had to hand

So far every "Ventnor" marked piece I have seen, like the above, has been thrown and decorated (use of colours, types of decoration) very much like the "Niton" marked examples I've seen. Subtle differences from the others, but I think they stand out from the crowd as much as the Scotcher pieces.

Due to the mark being (I assume) during a period when he was in partnership with Joe, fits in either thread really.

I believe these were likely made by either Ian Batten or Joe, at 22 Holyrood Street, Chard, Somerset. From the early 60's (not sure when) and closed in 68.

So another of Joe's apprentices.

Bit more info in "A century of Ceramics" page 82, by Lisa and Andrew Dowden. (assuming that's the IoW pottery book you have :))

Thanks Potty, yes I missed that entry in the book. Funny they mention the mark,
but it's not in the index, and they didn't show an example of it either.

Yeah true, I guess because the book is solely about potteries on the IoW itself.

Jo helped Mike Hendrick set up the Charmouth pottery in the 60s. This little bowl is the

Right, I've been through the 5 Banana boxes of IOW and I think I've found all the marks
I was looking for, so that's it for JO for the time being.
Just one of my favourite bits....

They look much like the "Freshwater" marked pieces.
