I have an original 'Giftware' price list from 1999 which lists the large cats as £30 in 'Red Delphis' or £25 in 'Velta/Lustre'. I think the red delphis must be a more orangey shade than the odyssey red, and was also used on ducks ( red delphis duck is £20 ). My guess is that once they phased out the std blue/green glazed cats they offered the different glazes at a premium price. Probably only lasted until first time they went into administration in early 2001.

These ones are Odyssey pattern (1999 - 2005).
Paintress mark looks most like Carol Bolton but hard to be sure.

Great . Thanks for this. I was going to contact Poole direct to enquire but you've saved me the job. They've ovbiously done the cats in different ranges if the Vogue ones exist too. I guess they are popularly known as delphis cats as the colours and living glaze technique do bear some resemblance to the original delphis look. Is there an up to date list of decorators marks you can point me to please as I've only come across the one on Robs Poole site which is great for past decorators marks.

They may have become known as Delphis cats because when they were first produced in Living Glaze in 1999 the first colourway was called "Red Delphis" (confusing I know). The same figures had been produced in the Dolphin Blue glaze since at least 1989. The Vogue cats were introduced in 2001. I am not absolutely sure when Odyssey was first used on cats, although the pattern itself dates from 1999. It is very similar to the Red Delphis (just extra yellow) so it is possible it replaced it, maybe also in 2001. The last time I can see cats in the catalogue is 2005.

There is no other free to view online source of decorators marks. The Collectors Club has identification galleries but is paid for membership. The best reference book is Hayward and Atterbury's "Poole Pottery". Sales catalogues from this later period also often have decorators marks in them.

Now thats what you call a real pooleing of information and expertise. Thank you to everyone who's contributed. I have seem a few if these in the online saleroom and ebay, seeming to sell for silly prices, so if Waldorf was £30 when first made he's been a good buy.....just need to find a mate to keep him company now. Thanks again all

I am 99% sure that this is a Poole living glaze piece, but not so sure as to why it is not marked. Is this the norm with Poole seconds from that era?
All ideas welcomed, thank you.

I guess its a glaze test piece
I think you'd have trouble convincing a collector it's Poole without the base stamp.

Galaxy was the name of this blob pattern on black background, blue background may have a different name

Thanks folks, much appreciated.

The collector was convinced Naomi, me Happy But yes, I can imagine some staunch collectors of Poole may not be too taken with a piece that isn't properly marked. Having said that, I have a couple of other pieces that have marks, but they are so feint & I am only able to see them slightly in a certain light.

The chap I bought it from (at the good old car boot sale) had a bowl with the vase, it was stamped Poole, but was on the black background. I chose the unsigned piece, the blue is my colour, not so keen on the Galaxy black.

yes many Poole collectors are all about the marks and don't touch pottery made by Poole potters once they leave the factory geek

This shape is known as a Pillar Lampbase. It was in the 2006 catalogue but I can't find anything later. I am pretty sure it was not made as late as 2014. Possibly the "batch no" is YYMMDD i.e. 2007

Cheers. I suspect the label came from the Poole Studio shop, and it was sold secondhand

I don't think it is anything to do with Cowes. The flags spell out "POOLE"

btw "pinxit" means "painted this" in Latin. It is painted by Karen Brown and designed by Sally Tuffin.

You aren't the first to think that 'pinxit' is the painters name, the term was revived by Renaissance artists along with the term 'fecit' which means 'made me' and can sometimes be seen on sculpture or carved works.
