Fish Tile Wall Hanging - Made in Denmark
I was wondering if you all could help me ID this pottery tile made in Denmark. I was thinking Royal Copenhagen but that is my total uneducated guess. I don't even know if they maket this type of tile. The tile is approximately 8 inches by 12 inches.
Thanks!
Karen

something seems to be wrong...

Re: Royal Copenhagen (Denmark)
Thanks - that is all very interesting. I wonder who the artist is if it is from 1961? I am trying to look up the initials EI or CI besides inge-lise koefoed and getting nowhere. But I will keep trying. And if there are any other people who can help with identification I would appreciate it.
Thank you all-

Re: Royal Copenhagen (Denmark)
inge-lise koefoed is the artist...
something seems to be wrong with the date she is supposed to worked for them...
might be possible that she did fayence designs for royal copenhagen from 1976 - 1978....
but worke for aluminia fayence allready in the 1960s?

Re: Royal Copenhagen (Denmark)
This is an artist list
http://www.jamiri.dk/artist.htm
But yours appears to have a number - 86 - in place of an artist's monogram. (Plus it has the vase shape, 1440, and a pattern number.)

Re: Royal Copenhagen (Denmark)
Due to the minimal detail on the design, and the number rather than artist's signature or monogram, I suspect it's an apprentice piece.

Re: Royal Copenhagen (Denmark)
I'd say it's a production piece rather than apprentice piece, the minimal detail / silhouette effect is intended.
I don't know much about this maker, but I'd have thought the initials next to the "88" was the decorators mark.

Re: Royal Copenhagen (Denmark)
I initially thought the b was an artist's initials, but it's not in the online list, and the artist's monogram should be the blue one. The other is the shape and pattern marks.

Re: Royal Copenhagen (Denmark)
I withdraw my comment about it being an apprentice piece.
I believe they are all production pieces, it's just that there will have been an artist at the start who designed the piece and probably did the first ones, which would bear their signature.
Checking on our Royal Copenhagen thread they aren't all signed. eg, Thorkild Olsen's vase:

I expect most of the ones on that list are the more known artists / decorators, would imagine a factory like that had many more decorators who have gone largely unrecorded.

Re: Royal Copenhagen (Denmark)
I suspect (and this is all speculation) it's part of a series, so somewhere there will be a 1440 88a with swans on it and the artist's monogram; while a trained decorator may have been entrusted with decorating the less detailed 88b vases.
There is a 1440 vase with swans on the ground and in the air, titled Swans homecoming, dating 1955. It may be a reproduction of 1440 88a. If so, if you find the artist to that one it may lead you to the artist who designed this one.

Re: Royal Copenhagen (Denmark)
It's possible there is a line under the L of Royal, which would date it to 1954
http://www.dphtrading.com/uk/directions/hallmarks-and-date-of-royal-copenhagen.aspx
That would tie in with other vases decorated with swans and geese, produced in the 50s.
