Re: Alan Wallwork
The Gallery Upstairs was Reg Moon, Torquil Pottery. He was a very good potter, but he also ran an important gallery. The shop donwstaits was fairly small, but the upstairs display place, and the garden were terrific. They held several shows a year, and sold a lot of high quality stiudio pottery

Re: Alan Wallwork
I'm sure that I have written this elsewhere but I was introduced to Reg Moon maybe 15 years ago by Mary Rich at Art in Clay. The first thing he said to me was,
"You deal with Alan Wallwork, don't you?"
After I said yes he came back with,
"Is he as obnoxious to you as he is to me?"
To which my reply was,
"I suspect so. I've always taken it as a sign that he likes me."
It's a fine looking Oval, Davee.

Well observed! I love tactile pieces like this, as long as I don't drop them!

Re: Alan Wallwork
It is with sadness that I have to report that Alan died in hospital this morning after a long illness. Not only was he a fine artist but also a good friend and his passing is a great loss to the studio ceramic world.
Alan at his first solo pottery exhibition at the Harlequin Gallery back in July 1999.

Re: Alan Wallwork
Sad news, his talent was outstanding and his pottery timeless

Re: Alan Wallwork
He must be up there amongst the best potters of the 'Golden Age' of studio pottery. His was a unique and wonderful body of work. Totally individualistic with a total original Organic vision. I suspect his pots will live on, long after other fashions have died. Sad day.

Re: Alan Wallwork
Yes he an certainly has a seat at the Golden Age table of British Ceramics.
I still think it a great shame that there is not a book published as a full record of his work.

Being partly involved with two previous attempts at such a book that were vetoed by the man himself, it could possibly happen. It's too early to discuss at this point but, if the family are happy for it to go ahead in the future, who knows.

Re: Alan Wallwork

Re: Alan Wallwork
It seems that since his death, prices for Alan Wallwork's work are starting to rise sharply. In the last two Maak sales.

Just yesterday a 16.5 cm split pod went for £776 on Ebay.
Pure irony really, and somewhat sad. An artist's true worth seems only to be recognised after his death.

Re: Alan Wallwork
Not sure it’s worth or scarcity. While a potter is still alive people think they’re still making. Supply v’s Demand. But once they’re dead then there’s a finite number and scarcity starts to push up the price.

Re: Alan Wallwork
Plus online costs and Buyer's premium puts the hammer price up circa 30% more. £640 or so, and it was not a particularly striking piece.
Methinks Naomi is probably right. A few people taking a punt on the future on prices which are peanuts in modern Art terms, Tho it would be really nice to think that his inherent artistic talent thjat was being recognised
