I cannot recall seeing such a painterly piece as this 44cms curved platter from Derek Davis before. It reminds me of the work of his very close friend Eric Mellon.

I find it amazing that i am still finding noted potters/artists from the period i am interested in, i must admit i was not familiar with Derek Davis until reading the above posts, he seems that he was quite well connected in the art world and yet there is very little information available. I find it strange that for a potter to have been potting for all those years that his pots are so scarce in the market place. I can't say that the Sang-De-Boeuf pieces shown are very inventive but his later work looks interesting, i will try to get hold of the book, looking through old catalogues from Bonhams and Christies it's amazing how many featured potters then are now almost forgotten.

The saleroom is a good place to start for an insight into the broad nature of his work that has been at auction

The Guardian has a good obituary. The book is Okay, but could be better. Available online circa £25.00.

A small atypical Derek Davis bowl with a slight chip in it. Bought it way back in 1997 at the sale of the Lillian Epstein collection as part of a larger lot. Somehow that makes me feel awful old! Laughter
