Scandinavian? Modern Pottery Horse With Male & Female Riders
I hope someone can help ID this piece of pottery for me. The horse appears scandinavian in nature based on others I've seen. This was purchased from a very high-end estate sale that included many mid-century american and danish studio pieces. The piece measures 9" long and 6" high. There are no maker's marks to be found. I really like this and I am one that needs to know more of the history of an object that I enjoy. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

The obvious one to think of is Lisa Larson - I know she designed figures similar to this for Gustavsberg (Sweden) but I would have expected it to be marked either by Gustavsberg and/or Lisa Larson. I've looked through the book showing her designs from 1954 up until 1980 and it's not in there.

It has a touch of the Stig Lindbergs about it too - look at this link but I would definitely expect it to be signed (are you sure there are no marks on your piece anywhere?)

I have a book showing some of SL designs somewhere but I can't find it right now.

I have been looking down the same path as you Pip,Lisa and Stig did make similar pieces but I have found non that appear that close to the horse in question,I still think Gustavsberg is correct though

I was tempted by this lovely chap earlier this year but the seller and I failed to reach a compromise on price

this stamp is what one would hope to find on a Gustavsberg horse

Re: Scandinavian? Modern Pottery Horse With Male & Female Riders
I did consider Larson and Linberg as well but didn't find anything close enough to convince me it could be attributed to either. I've inspected it thoroughly for a mark and none can be found. I will remove the old felt pads on the bottom though there would not be much room for a mark there since there is mostly open space under them. I did pick up a beautiful ceramic plaque by Polia Pillin at the same sale but I do not believe she made any figures much less in this style. Thank you all for your assistance!

The only problem is that all Soholm's pieces are marked and most are numbered. The colour of the clay is also not in line with Soholm's production. I must admit that I have seen a few unmarked animal figure in the style of Lisa Larson's over the year. Due to the popularity of her work, she is likely to have been often copied.
