Animal Friends - St Just - from 1977


Animal Friends was started by Biddy Picard in 1977. John Parkes and Barbara Pilkington helped out on a temporary basis intially but eventually took over in 1980. They produce a wide range of birds and animals, each individually hand-crafted. John is especially noted for his larger pieces of work such as gannets and and cormorants.

John and Barbara's work is available from many craft shops and galleries in Corwall and further afield.

I remember that name connected with Mousehole pottery?

Yes there is a connection but only for a short while at Mousehole. The pottery is set up at the Eagle Cottage, Kelynack, St Just.

The Seal pup on the right is Animal Friends

This is about 20 cm in length, and has two marks on the base, AF & JP.
Any idea of maker?

I think the AF stands for Animal Friends - made in Cornwall. JP would be John Parkes.

This the mark on the bigger one the pup doesn't have a mark , probably too slippy when they were being done

Love the seals. Sometimes they come into the shop glued to pebbles, (I seem to recall some were made for various animal charities).

Is there any connection between these makers and Tremar, as the animal figures are very similar.
