Schaeffenacker Wood/Pottery Wall Plaque
Hello all -- I haven't posted in quite a while, but picked up this Schaffernacker wood and pottery plaque at auction last night and have several questions about it I was hoping you might help me answer. I love this piece, and I'm planning to keep it, but am wondering if I should take any steps to repair the slight edge damage to the wood veneer. The wood veneer is applied over a type of particle board. The front is in great shape, but three of the edges have chips and a slight lifting of the veneer. My first thought was to take it to a furniture restorer to have the edge veneer replaced, but I've since realized I should probably just leave it alone (when mounted on the wall the edges are not really visible). Any thoughts?
Also, I can't find much information on this type of wood/pottery combination for Schaffernacker -- were many of these produced? This piece is fairly large at 29" high and 14.5" wide, and I haven't seen any others of this type. Any estimation of a date of production would also be very welcome, if anyone has an idea. Thanks so much.

Re: Schaeffenacker (Germany)
these are very very rare
yours is the second I've ever seen...
I own the other one....
I was told that nobody have seen one of these and therefore there are doubts that it is by him.
I've been allways sure it's schaeffenacker and feel quite thankful to see another one
mine is just half size of yours...

Re: Schaeffenacker (Germany)
you won't find many informations about this type of work on wood
I've searched quite a little time to find informations but couldn't find anything....
I would just keep the veneer like it is if the damage is not visible when mounted...

Re: Schaeffenacker (Germany)
Styleinvasion and big ed, thank you so much for the information. I have just emailed the Schaffenacker site, and will update this post if I receive a response from them. Also, please excuse the extra "r" I inserted in Schaffenacker in the title of this post -- I always make that mistake for some reason. (If someone can fix it or tell me how to edit it, I'd be grateful.) Thanks again.

Re: Schaeffenacker (Germany)
Thanks for the information styleinvasion -- I've wondered about that. So can it correctly be written either Schäffenacker or Schaeffenacker? (I didn't know how to make the a with umlauts until about 2 minutes ago.)

Re: Schaeffenacker (Germany)
Just a quick update regarding this Schaeffenacker wall plaque -- I just heard back from Helmut Schaeffenacker's eldest daughter, Ate Schaeffenacker-Zemel, and she confirmed that this plaque is the work of her father. She said she remembered this piece from her youth.
It's wonderful to have this confirmation -- thanks so much Big Ed for posting that email link. I'm going to send Ate a few more photos of the plaque at her request. If she has any further information regarding this type of wood-mounted plaque, I'll be sure to pass it along. Thanks again everyone.
