Re: Guy Sydenham
Looks like his pattern book. I would assume he perfected the pieces through trial and error then when they were right and he was pleased with them he recorded them for the future so he could reproduce them for commercial purposes. He could always have just drawn them then made them but I doubt that somehow.
They have a monetary value but to the GS fans out there they are worth far more together as a record of his thoughts and working and a snapshot of that moment in time. No. 1 I would take good photos of them all as professional as possible so they are recorded if anything happens to them or if they get sold and split up. No. 2 I would try to share them somehow either through your own website or perhaps Virtual museum would publish them.
If you sell them at auction then they will be lost to the the greedy hording collector who will just hide them in their basement never to be seen again.
You should be thanked for saving them tbh. They could easily have ben throw away by someone

Re: Guy Sydenham
I feel the same. As iam not in my Home, iam just clearing the home of my parents, where i stored many of my items, In Italy, i have a professional camera, I use for my work, with very high res. That would mean they go to Italy. I did think i would take them back. I am trying to sell some items, but its not that easy. What i think i will do is just that, i will document them with good photos . I will post here, but if any body would like them in high res, they would need to be transferred. maybe i could do that with yourself . They are quite amazing, the quality of the drawing, and there are many pages. As a professional potter, i always valued these, and many of guys things i Have.
I was put into a very difficult situation on Green island, When Guy and Joan left, we had fired one kiln together, and guy showed me a few of the tricks on the island, He then upset the new owners , in a bad way, and they stopped him coming back, I will not go into details, as its personal to both parties, so i was left without the master !!!. I made some great work there over three years. The last time i met Guy was in Bournemouth university , we had an exhibition together, Green Island Potters. 1998

Re: Guy Sydenham
Hi Crawford, Is there a large collecting base for Sydenham's work?, if not then after photographing them it might be better to sell them to a serious collector who i am sure would look after and treasure them.

Re: Guy Sydenham
Well there does appear to be some interest in his work , so i would think the obvious thing to do would be to publish these sketches as a supplement to any books that have been published, this is what happens in most collecting fields providing there is evidence of enough take up .

Re: Guy Sydenham
the sketches for his more sculptural pieces would be of interest to collectors, much more than his tableware
If you had mermaid sketches I would get very excited

Re: Guy Sydenham
The sketches provide more pieces of the bellarmine puzzle for me. I can see notes on there saying 'original size' and 'late type' along with a lot of measurements which suggest he had access to some of the original jugs to examine. I'd love to see those notes in better resolution please. Really interesting stuff.

DVD of Guy and Joan Sydenham living on Green Island
Anyone who hasn't seen this episode can buy it on DVD from this website...It's called Poole Harbour in January . It features Guy and Joan Sydenham living on Green Island and shows Guy making mermaids. Guy does most of the talking but a really rare piece of film and well worth buying . Other topics are also covered in the episode such as lobster fishing and boat building !

I received this in the post just recently and it came though in a couple of days from ordering. Very nice people at country ways films !

Re: Guy Sydenham
The seller sold many of his Gs pots at half the market price. I would have bought most of them a few years ago but now I pick the better pieces out and leave the rest for newer colllectors to enjoy

Just clicked on Dans two images and had a notification for each one of a potential virus attack. I had seen them on ebay though not sure if I had clicked on any images at the time . Beware in case there is a problem somewhere.

Re: Guy Sydenham
Did anyone win this one on eBay? It went a bit over budget for me but it did have the four goblets included.

Re: Guy Sydenham
I saw it but the salt glaze didn't appeal, also the goblets were probably never intended to go with the jug.

Re: Guy Sydenham
I have so many goblets from various potteries. Oddly these don't appeal to me, might change if I held one. I tend to give people each a different goblet - you should hear them moan hen they think they are not getting exactly the dame amount of wine and they fight over who's having the apparently largest. It is strange that they generally all turn out to be the same volume if you fill the small ones to the top and the big ones slightly less. It's nice to give people a choice of goblets at the start, and explain that the wine is worth £10 but I paid £55 for the goblet. People are so used to drinking out of crap mass produced nothing.
Re: Guy Sydenham
I am teetotal. Never have liked wine overmuch. It mostly all tastes ghastly to me. Its difficult to drink a cup of coffee or tea out of a goblet. Are you a Goblet Snob then Crawford?
