Hi!

I received a gift for my birthday this year that was a lovely little sculpture of a lady - she appears to be of the art deco time period. I am calling her art pottery because of her matte glazing and color scheme. She is terracotta, but even with my art history prowess my exhaustive searches to put a manufacturer to her have come up empty handed. Can any help me? The markings are capital "L"s. Three on the bottom of the base and one on the back of the piece accompanied by the number "554". Thanks a million!!

stumped by a gift 124209 Hi, kmj welcome to the forum, your lady looks old to me. Perhaps we could have a close up of the wording please - is it readable?

xx

Hi,

I wondered about her age, whether it was just a care worn thing or not... The marks are stamped into the surface. Thanks for your sleuthing!

FYI, She is a copy of a "Tanagra Figurine" - Here is a little blurb about the ancient original on which she is based...

The Titeux Dancer's lively pose radically altered
the accepted view of Greek statuary in Western Europe in the 19th
century, and inspired many artists of the day. The Dancer was
incorrectly associated with Tanagra, but was in reality made in the
ancient city of Athens, the capital of the Greek region of Attica. The
figure's elegant lines, and the delicate handling of the folds of her
cloak, herald the "Tanagran" style which would appear in Athens a few
years later, then spread to Tanagra and the whole of the Mediterranean
basin. The statuette is traditionally identified as a dancer, but she
may equally represent a Nymph, the protectress of brides-to-be.
