ID for Print needed
I'm looking for some help with this print I purchased yesterday. It looks 60's in style to me? I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction., googling 'salvation army band print' doesn't get you very far!

Re: ID for Print needed
err, going to make myself look stupid now but the gas towers look really familiar ( Iknow.... they probably look the same everywhere, but I'm thinking M6 ...Birmingham maybe? ) I KNOW those gas towers from somewhere. I'll have a think. Ok so it doesn't help with who but perhaps where might lead to who

Dan, I know you're not being patronising right? just thinking I've been drinking or something yeah? Well I haven't. And you never know, brainstorming the gas towers could lead to a solution....maybe.

Re: ID for Print needed
oooohhhh kaaaay, hubby has just pointed out that mostly there are always two gas thingies together anyway, and when I said actually I now think it might be up North he (from Liverpool) replied 'Well of course it's oop north, them houses, the Sally', so there you have it. I think it's even further north than Birmingham and I'm sure the artist will be Northern remember when you find out, that you heard it here first
love the print btw

Re: ID for Print needed
There were plenty 'gasometers' around the Midlands, the ones you were thinking of m are by the M6 at Walsall. But I also think its possibly more Northern, the flat roofed terraces are quite unusual, might be a clue

Re: ID for Print needed
me - I used to own one ,well not in front of the gasometers obviously, but fairly near a mill chimney and my grandma - two up two down terraced right in t'northern heartland of Lancs. Mind you we weren't far from Pendle Hill either - family's stomping ground. Still is for many of my rather large family - hence my purchase of the little pottery chimney figure thingy. I loved my little house. I live in the West Country now. The only reason we wouldn't live up North when we moved out of London is the weather otherwise we'd have gone back.

Re: ID for Print needed
I can't add anything to this thread other than to say a) I like the print b) I have no idea at all who designed it or could have designed it c) I also think it dates circa 1960s and d) I also think it's a very Northern scene.

Re: ID for Print needed
its a woodcut or lino-cut. Terraced houses with a flat facade sometimes have a sloping roof behind them there are houses likr that in London
Re: ID for Print needed
Looks like i'm not going to get anywhere quick with this one, the style of the figures still ring a bell with me though I just can't place it. I really like it so i'm getting it remounted and framed, i'll post anything else I find out about it.

Re: ID for Print needed
excellent and I'm glad you recognised my description of Walsall
I've been googling Lancashire cartoonists but nothing so far.
It's so of it's time. I remember my parents and grandparents were always pro-Sally and talked alot about how much they helped people, and I think, also about how they help trace people after the war etc.

Re: ID for Print needed
It is a common error, the Dubliners are famous for singing it. But your post lead me to look at Salford which does have double gas towers very similar

Re: ID for Print needed
For what it's worth, gas towers appeared all over britain , they were not specific to any one area scotland , ireland , etc . I wonder why the artist portrays the cartoon at night time , full moon , N' Stuff
