I thought you might be interested to see these.  I am about to sell them, but until I investigated them I had no idea what I'd bought.  They are (I think) antique Bonsai figurines, hand made in clay with a majolica glaze. Considering they are less than 1inch tall I think they are rather fabulous!  do you agree?

Nice figurines. I have a friend who has collected similar figures for years. If I remember correctly they are Chinese and have been made since about the 1920's. There are also contemporary versions still being made. I will try to remember to ask my friend for more specifics next time I see him.

Hi Calusa
Many thanks for any information - that would be great. Yes, I'm pretty sure these are Chinese, and I think they date back a little longer than the '20s. I think some of them are called Mudman figures, but from what I've gathered those are larger and mud coloured. And they seem to be marked on the early ones. I think these are in the same vein, definitely for Bonsai usage but mine are unmarked and they are from pale clay. From looking at my figures and reading about the glazes etc, I think mine are pretty old. The newer ones are more sophisticated. Mind you I think these are incredible for their size. They don't seem to fetch much but I don't have Bonsai and someone may like them. I have a whole set of them, including some animals, all apart from two/three (which are larger by a little and which I think could actually be classed as mud man figures) are done in lovely majolica glaze.
Any help on how to list them regarding information, would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

they are Chinese playthings from around 1880 onwards. One can build a kind of garden with them.

thanks Frillo. So are mine old then do you know? Can I class them under Antiques?
I hope no one minds but I'm going to add some more pictures of some of the others because they are so exquisite.

well I have found a piece that has CHINA impressed on it, so I 'think' that could date it to 1890 to 1919. The others are undated, so *may* date from before that.
some more checking me thinks.
