clarice cliff fakes
I found these at a car boot sale this morning, they are well made and I quite like the design.
Although they look like Lorna Bailey pottery I cannot find that pattern or shape linked to her name
They are unmarked

Re: clarice cliff fakes
Nice pair but I don't think the quality is there for them to be Lorna Bailey's. Looking at that web page they look very similar to the one at the end, titled "Fake Honolulu style bowl carrying a counterfeit backstamp"

Looks like a fake Newport Clarice Cliff mark.
The bottom bit would read "Newport Pottery" with "England" underneath.

Still a useful observation, Potty.

Re: clarice cliff fakes
Seems she designed some lustre pieces for the American market. Not sure if this is pre- or post- Bizarre

Re: clarice cliff fakes
I suspect it's using the pre-Clarice Oriflamme type glazes and her name as a "brand". She knew nothing about glazes.

Re: clarice cliff fakes
Sadly it proved to be a fake. I got this message from the Clarice Cliff collectors club
Very sorry to advise that your Shape 990 Indian Tree vase is a well known fake with a counterfeit mark.
This has been confirmed by the Clarice Cliff Collectors Club in an alert to your vase in their eBay forum,
http://claricecliff.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/frm/f/878101301
There are a number of problems with your vase which is very modern, the embossed pattern is not as crisp or extensive as on an original vase, the mark underneath is not quite the same as an original litho, the font is not quite the same and the spacings are wrong. Also Wilkinsons did not produce a lustre glaze which is different to the glaze used on Oriflamme pieces. I have attached images of a genuine Shape 990 Indian Tree Vase so you can see the differences for your self.
I am sorry to give you bad news about your vase but I should also advise that counterfeits may not be sold on eBay because it is against the law in the UK to pass off counterfeit goods. The club may be able to help you further if you ask them.

It's a fake, Denby. Just posted the message from the Clarice Cliff collectors club.

Re: clarice cliff fakes
Some experts :). I'd listed it on a general British pottery collectors Forum but they didn't know. Then I listed it on eBay and the Clarice Cliff collectors club promptly got in touch. Anyway, I've deleted it. I'll drop it off at the Charity shop.

From where it will probably be purchased and end up on Ebay again!
Re: clarice cliff fakes
Can't say I have ever seen this fake before. I have however seen plenty of the
large colourful "Lotus" jugs, for sale at fairs, very shiny, with an over-printed black
backstamp. The owner of our local centre was nearly caught out with one, brought
in to sell, until I warned her off it!

Re: clarice cliff fakes
Well just in case anyone else gets caught out I've rubbed the marks off with sand paper. Seems there are other marks underneath, in a circle, but too obscured by glaze to read.

Re: clarice cliff fakes
It's an odd sort of fake really as it doesn't look anything like what a Clarice Cliff collector would be interested in buying.

Re: clarice cliff fakes
Yes and even the genuine article shown above is not exactly very sought after either.
Re: clarice cliff fakes
Maybe it's done by a real Clarice Cliff collector in order to destroy all Indian Tree vases?
