Re: John Maltby
Unusual small porcelain lidded box with copper highlights by John Maltby (verified by Maltby himself).
Inscribed Maltby by the potter on the base, but also has JOHN MALTBY written in another hand in pink over the top.

Re: John Maltby
My only Maltby - from last year. I buy stuff to use and I have 'quaffed' from this bottle & x2 small picnic goblets. It takes a full bottle of wine. I chill the whole thing in the fridge.
Only problem is that I make my own wine and have a ready supply of new corks. I almost cried when I stupidly pushed the cork into the bottle one day. God did I call myself stupid. Who wants to buy a Maltby with a rotten cork inside?
Youtube to the rescue! It works a treat, just make sure you use a cheepo thin plastic bag.

studio vase marked M - John Maltby
stoneware vase, I'm sure we have seen this M mark before but the potter's work doesn't impress me so I forget the name?

Re: John Maltby
I have checked both marks against internet pics of his well known pieces and they match perfectly.
The vase looks to be a very early example of a form he later improved upon

Adding this here from another thread of mixed pots

I have inherited a lot of pots from my inlaws who recently died. They used to run the Godfrey May Gallery in Dartmouth in the late 60's and bought from all the big names of the day.
Unfortunately a lot of the pots were used every day and didn't survive! Makes me want to cry...

Early John Maltby, Stoneshill Pottery
Hi - I have these two pieces that i have had listed to sell but wanted to ask for confirmations as the horse with riders is stamped stoneshill pottery - which i cant find on any other pieces he has made, and the other has no markings at all. A chap emailed me, a friend of john Maltbys, and said that he only ever hand signed / stamped pieces that were for sale, that those that were unsigned were made as gifts. Any way i have put photos below and any comments would be welcome.

Re: John Maltby
I've been told that too, on a little lidded box which Maltby himself IDed, so I think I know who made that comment. A keen collector, but of Maltby's later work. Im sure I've seen another very early John Maltby from this time; I'll chase it up.
Unfortunately the thumbnails aren't opening. If you repost I'll show them to another collector.

Re: John Maltby
No reply so far, but I'm don't really think there is any question that they're not by Maltby. His early Stonehill pottery isn't as popular as his later work or his later figures. More curiosity value.

Re: John Maltby
John Maltby prices seem to be moving sharply. This 'Large and Important' (auctioneers description!) entitled 'Hopscotch' sold at a hammer price of £4000 at Cheffins in Cambridge today. Bearing in mind the auctioneer's Byer's commission is 25.5% + VAT,Artist Rights $%(?), Internet Bidding costs 3% + VAT,then the final cost to the Buyer is upping not far short of £6000....! There was other substantial prices for an automaton over £1000, and another sculptural figure went £1000.

Re: John Maltby
I made a healthy profit on the sculptural piece Dan so no complaints from me , I made an even healthier profit selling 6 Sam Hall pots last week to an artist in Wales , I don't believe in hanging on to pots for ever , I enjoy them for as long as I feel then move on and buy others etc etc , TBH I think that Maltby sale was a flash in the pan ( hope i'm wrong though)

Selling is a very important part of buying and selling and something that has to be done at whatever level you are dealing at. Over the years many things I've sold have gone up in price and a significant number bought back by me at a profit to the original buyer and re-sold. More than once becomes boring though.
Not sure that the auction prices are a flash in the pan, as I have noticed a keenness to buy over recent months. That's not only from collectors but also from other dealers, who have been contacting me significantly more than in the past.

Re: John Maltby
This one was £1300.
Do not know if these prices apply to Studio pottery right across the board tho. Its seems the small cadre of potters that have achieved high prices over many years, are just getting higher prices.
