Re: John Maltby
That is a nice one Studio! Any idea of its date? Stylistically it looks rather early 1980's. That very accomplished decoration against a whire background. That style looks quite different from his later 80's and 90's work.

Re: John Maltby
The Aberystwyth collection has several pieces from the early 1980's the decoration palette is often very similar.
Yours and Studio's are extra special tho!

Re: John Maltby
The Crafts Council purchased a similar jug to mine in 1984 so that kind of helps to narrow it down….

Re: John Maltby
What is very interesting is Maltby's date change from this sort of style, to his lot more colourful style, Given that this decorative palette was quite successful for him

John Maltby at Aberystwyth. Ten pieces covering from the early 1980's, They give the acquisition dates so it is useful in style changes judgements,

Nice! You can rarely mistake a John Maltby! That lovely decoration is so atypical.

Re: John Maltby
True, but David Melville’s latest work with reds and blues has elements of Maltby in it. I’ve done a double take before now at the fairs, thinking Ive seen a Maltby. But thankfully he marks all his pots

That Maltby was a good buy as well! His sold prices seem to have declined quite markedly from the peak just after his death.

Re: John Maltby
It has 2 chips on the inside rim which weren't mentioned or shown in the ebay listing so I told the seller off. Normally he's reliable but he almost lost his 100% positive rating with a sloppy listing.

I wouldn't buy anything from anyone that gives a condition report as "appears good" and wouldn't expect anyone to buy anything from me if that's all I said, especially if the images wouldn't expand.

John Maltby
Hi I have just joined this group and I'm wondering if anyone can supply information about the "lodgers fiddles" shown rather unclearly in the book John Maltby - A life of creativity. Page 40 published in conjunction with the Yew Tree Gallery, Cornwall.
I have admired his automata for a very long time and have 2 samples hanging on my wall. So if anyone can help with this enquiry I would really appreciate it.
Many thanks Nigel Graham.

Re: John Maltby
The photo in the Yew Tree book looks quite an early one. If you read the credits at the back of the book there were two long time large collector's of Maltby's work who shared old photos. Nigel Dutt and Martin Browne.
Nigel Dutt was on Grand Designs a little while ago when building a large eco friendly house . He is also a well known photographer, You could see his collection of John Maltby pieces in the background. I think be he is on Facebook or other Social media.
Martin Browne lives in Ilkley Yorkshire and sells on Ebay as martinscupboard The link is to one of his recently sold pieces. You should be able to contact him via Ebay.

Re: John Maltby
Nigel here - I checked with the family re the fiddles but they don’t know, so I’ll ask at the Yew Tree when I’m there….
