Re: Help identify signature please?
Barbara Cass has the initials 'BC' and either 'York' or 'Arden'. All painted in a similar way as this. This is missing the 'B' and the 'york' is not very convincing. I agree, it doesn't look much like her work either.

Re: Help identify signature please?
Is there anywhere I could take it to get it identified?
Is it even worth the trouble? I mean, its nice enough... but maybe not THAT nice !

There isn't anywhere to take it to get it identified, even in the old days when auction houses had "experts", who knew about important pots it would have been impossible. Now most auction house "studio pottery experts" would find it difficult to tell you what it was made of let alone who made it.

Re: Help identify signature please?
Ok! I'll try another tack - is there anywhere else I could look to try to get this identified - its probably not worth too much effort, but (I know this is a criminal thing to ask) are there any other appropriate forums?studio-pots wrote:There isn't anywhere to take it to get it identified, even in the old days when auction houses had "experts", who knew about important pots it would have been impossible. Re: Help identify signature please?
I have been dealing in studio pottery from over 20 years and specialsing in it for 12 and haven't come across another forum that has as much about studio pottery as this one.
On the "ID my pottery list" under Studio Flask Vase RB?, big ed has listed a link to all the pottery associations in the UK that have web sites, but as he says if the potter isn't currently working or is not a member then that isn't going to help.
A pottery collector did have a section of his site where unidentified pots could be listed but I see that he has stopped that - I imagine because of the space it takes up.
One possibility is that on a few occasions during the year I believed that the V&A Museum in London allows the public to take along items for possible indentification. I don't know how that works or if you need to book an appointment but it might be worth investigating.
It is annoying when you can't identify who made a pot and I have several pots by unknown makers that I have kept and don't ever expect to find the maker but enjoy them just the same. Like your bowl these are not by anyone of importance so knowing who made them doesn't alter their value.

Re: Help identify signature please?
I feel very optomistic that most of the id requests on this forum will eventually result in a positive identification,we have almost three new members joing the forum every day and a very enthusiastic membership who constantly improve their individual and collective knowledge.
