John Singleman ex Leach
Has anyone got any studio pottery by John Singleman?
I have just acquired a large jug with the same 'S' stamp as the pottery marks book displays and would like to compare it with others.
I would like to put on a picture but still having trouble with getting them onto this site.
Cheers

Re: John Singleman ex Leach
It looks like I am getting there with these photos, the last two are a lot bigger and readable.
The 'S' stamp is clearly much like the John Singleman one as in the studio potters book.
Can anyone shed any light on this???

The answer to your first question is almost certainly no. I know very little about the man, except that he was the husband of the sculptor, Barbara Tribe, and suspect that he made very little and what he did make was far more "arty" than the jug that you have. I also suspect his "Leach Pottery" connection was fairly tenuous. This illustrates the major problems with the Potters' Marks book in that anyone could add their details and say anything they wanted - it wasn't checked.
Although I haven't really seen him use the glaze on your jug, I think that it is most likely the work of Jack Kenny. The S stands for Seasalter in Kent where he worked. Jack, like two other potters, Edmund de Waal and Suleyman Saba, was a pupil at Kings School in Canterbury where they were taught by the potter, Geoffrey Whiting, and all gained their interest in ceramics there. Jack and Suleyman have become very able potters, unlike their colleague, but are less well known.
